Engaged scholar-practitioner Tracy A. Corley is frequently sought as an expert, speaker, and lecturer in urban and environmental affairs. Dr. Corley teaches and conducts research worldwide, advancing transformative approaches for places seeking to co-create governance, policies, and research through deeper community relationships. She has presented her systematic review "Transformative Science for Transitional Times" at global conferences including the 2024 International Conference on Urban Affairs in New York, and in 2025 delivered "Introduction to Transformative Science" as a graduate course for the School of Public and Business Management at the State University of Maringá in Brazil.

Previously, Dr. Corley directed graduate programs for Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities and formalized the community-engaged research program at Conservation Law Foundation, expanding participatory research across New England. As an author, she published The Strategy String: An Organizational Primer for Tying Strategy to Performance and applies its framework in her advisory and consulting services. She is also lead author of multiple peer-reviewed publications, including "Do You See What I Smell? A Participatory Visual Arts Method for Documenting Residents’ Experiences with Odors in Providence, Rhode Island", and From Transactional to Transformative: The Case for Equity in Gateway City Transit-Oriented Development. Her production credits include a WGBH webinar series on equitable development, and she is an accomplished event keynote, moderator, and host.

MODULE 1 — Why Engage Community? From Extraction to Participation

Where did extractive ways of working come from, and why do they persist? We trace the roots of extraction, modern-day extractive practices, and explore how participatory approaches can either deepen or dissolve them. You'll be introduced to community engagement strategies and frameworks including the Spectrum of Community Engagement, the emergence of transformative approaches across different fields, and how practitioners are putting these tools to work in projects like yours.

MODULE 2 — The Ethics of Engagement

What does it mean to engage community ethically? Together we'll examine the considerations that arise when planning, research, and governance work on behalf of the public — including the honest tensions between purpose and practice. You'll develop the mindset for choosing the right kind of engagement for each situation, understand how differences in power shape ethical choices, and practice aligning the interests of everyone at the table.

MODULE 3 — Ways of Knowing for Effective Engagement

Communities, especially those divided between mainstream and marginalized experiences, often hold different ways of knowing, and those differences matter for effective engagement. But what does it take to bridge them? We'll explore varied knowledge systems and wisdom traditions, and look closely at how personal experience serves as crucial, valid data for connecting disparate communities.

MODULE 4 — Ways of Being When Engaging Others
Wednesday, November 18

Engagement isn't just a to-do on a project checklist: it shapes, and is shaped by, who we are. We'll explore definitions of engagement and community and how power, processes, and relationships affect these concepts in research, planning, and governance. This exploration will also consider how "reality gaps" contribute to miscommunication, misinformation, misperceptions, and eroded trust in shared facts.

MODULE 5 — Ways to Co-Create with Communities
Wednesday, December 2

Co-creation requires good relationships. Otherwise, it is difficult to engage communities in investigating, analyzing, and shaping recommendations for research and planning. We'll explore a range of scientific and evidence-based methods rooted in relational process, including non-traditional methods such as arts-based and somatic approaches. Such tools for investigating, analyzing, and making meaning invite people to participate through familiar and accessible ways that sustain co-creation over time.

MODULE 6 — Assessing Extraction and Engagement
Wednesday, December 9

This module brings it all together: we'll assess real-world cases for engagement opportunities and pitfalls using the tools built across the course and see examples of the frameworks in action. We'll close with a celebration of your learning cohort's journey and how you can continue as a practice group with your complimentary (Co)Action Lab membership.

Q: I'm just starting my career — do I need experience?

No professional or community engagement experience is required! Despite some participants having established careers in research, policy, planning, and governance, they might be new to these topics. Also, community engagement and transformative approaches are constantly being updated, and everyone will start with different levels of experience that might be unrelated to their professional training and positions. So professionals at all stages of familiarity with these topics can both learn from and contribute from their participation in this course.

Q: Do I need an active community engagement project to participate in this course?

No. While this course draws on real-world examples and practical applications, there is no requirement to have—or plan to have—an ongoing community engagement project to enroll or earn your certificate.

Q: Do I need any prior technical skills to participate?

No, prior technical skills are not required. You will just need a genuine interest in engaging new, hard-to-reach, and marginalized communities more effectively in your work or an interest in learning more about whether this approach is a fit for your professional career.

COURSE FORMAT & MATERIALS

Q: How much time should I expect to commit each week outside the live sessions?

There is no expectation to spend time outside of each live session on course material. However, we encourage you to deepen your learning on the themes and review supplementary materials that may be provided or referenced in the course. We also invite you to test the concepts and tools in your work between sessions, and to bring your experiences and insights to the next class, advisory sessions, and/or (Co)Action Lab Practice Group.

Q: What happens if I have to miss a live module — will recordings be available?

Recordings will be available within a few business days after each session. You will have access to recordings until January 31, 2027.

Q: Are the live sessions mandatory, or can I complete the course entirely asynchronously?

Attendance at live sessions is expected: this course is designed for real-time, hands-on learning and requires interaction among the participants and the instructor. Live attendance is not formally required, but the certificate of competency is only granted for the sessions attended in real time. We hope that the weeks with no live session (weeks of November 4 and 25) will offer time to catch up and recharge during the course.

Q: What time of day are sessions held, and in what time zone? Can international participants attend?

The sessions run on Wednesdays, from 7:30–9:00 PM U.S. Eastern time. Since all sessions are held online, the course is open for international participants who can accommodate the time difference (23:30–01:00 UTC on Wednesdays/Thursdays through October 28 and 00:30–02:00 UTC on Thursdays starting with the November 11 session due to Daylight Savings Time). These hours may be best suited for real-time participation from Asia, Oceania (including Australia) in addition to South and North America, but all are welcome to attend if the timing is suitable.

Q: How large is the cohort?

The cohort is limited to 25 participants.

Q: Will I interact with other participants, or is it mainly lecture-based?

Participants will interact with each other throughout this course. Interactive activities are an integral part of how content is delivered in this seminar-style course.

Q: Is there homework, reading, or a project component?

Although homework and outside reading and project work is not required, you are encouraged to apply the concepts in your work and conduct deeper investigation into the topics and themes that relate to your work. You are also encouraged to bring insights and findings from the study and application of the course materials back to the classroom and to other interactions with the course cohort and community of practice.

Q: Is there an assessment, and what do I need to do to complete the course?

There is no structured assessment for the course. Live, active participation is the only requirement to complete and be certified for each course module.

Q: How long will I have access to the recordings and course materials?

Course recordings are available until January 31, 2027. Other course materials are available online indefinitely.

Q: Do I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes! Even better, you receive a certificate of competency to demonstrate that you actively participated in the course activities, which are designed to apply what you've learned along the way. Q: Does the course offer CEUs or AICP certification maintenance credits?

As a live course with engagement with the speaker and other participants, this course qualifies for continuing education units (CEUs), professional development hours (PDHs), and other credits for many associations. Depending on your association, it may qualify for up to 9 hours of live instruction continuing education credits for ethics, cultural competency, and other topics. COURSE COMMUNITY

Q: I see that six months of (Co)Action membership is included. Can I start at any time?

(Co)Action Lab is a community of practice, built on trusting relationships to provide support for social change-makers like you. So, we have Practice Groups that open only a few times each year. For the Fall 2026 certificate course, the next Practice Group opens in January 2027 — just in time to put what you've learned into practice. The meeting dates and times will be determined in part by the course participants.

Q: Do I have to join (Co)Action Lab to participate in the course? If I choose not to join, is there a discount?

Joining the January 2027 Practice Group is optional. The (Co)Action Lab membership is bundled into your enrollment, so it's included whether or not you attend the Practice Group.

Q: What happens after the 6-month community membership ends — can I renew it, and at what cost?

All (Co)Action Lab participants will be eligible to renew their membership for as long as they like and keep the price level at the time they began their membership. For example, those who start with the January 2027 Practice Group will keep the introductory January 2027 pricing for renewals through December 2028. Yes, you can schedule the two 30-minute advisory sessions as a single 60-minute session.

Q: Can I use the advisory time to get feedback on a specific project, proposal, or piece of research?

Yes! The advisory time can be used for project feedback, to review course materials, or discuss your professional or career opportunities and goals related to the course themes.

Q: Does the 60 minutes expire, or can I use it after the course ends?

The advisory sessions are offered to support you during your participation in the course and expire on January 31, 2027. Appointment slots and scheduling links will be sent with your welcome packet after enrollment.
